Oklahoma Department of Education

The Oklahoma Department of Education is an agency of the State Government charged with setting and directing administrative policy for the functioning of the State’s public schools. The main acting Oklahoma State Department of Education authority is the State School Superintendent, an office also comprising the post of Secretary of Education and Chair of the Oklahoma School Board.

The Oklahoma Department of Education can be located in Oklahoma City, with its headquarters based at 2500 North Lincoln Blvd., in the Oliver Hodge Building. The Board governing the Oklahoma State Department of Education is appointed at the discretion of the State Governor, subject to the approval or rejection of the State Senate.

The authority of the Oklahoma Department of Education extends both to the administrative issues of the State’s public school system, such as funding concerns, and to the curriculum used in schools. In this regard, the Oklahoma State Department of Education will act to ensure that public schools maintain a policy of compliance with the standards that have been adopted by its Board of Education.

One exception to the authority of the Oklahoma State Department of Education exists in the form of the sector of schools established by legal correctional as well as educational reasons. As such, these schools are under the ultimate authority of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, a separate State Agency. As it is currently titled and set up, the Oklahoma Department of Education dates back to 1971.  If you need legal advice and assistance, contact Oklahoma lawyers.
