Indiana Department of Education

The Indiana Department of Education bears the governmental responsibility for primary and secondary education throughout the State under the administrative purview of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. As of 2010, this office in the Indiana Department of Education is filled by Dr. Tony Bennett, who chairs the Indiana State Board of Education, which is comprised of ten additional members appointed by the State Governor.

This central body of the Indiana Department of Education has a greater degree of control over the general administrative policy according to which Indiana schools are run than the curriculum of the classes through which students pass. People with queries or concerns with the Indiana Department of Education can visit the physical facilities in Indianapolis, at 151 West Ohio Street. Concerns can also be addressed to the Indiana Department of Education at (317) 232-6610, by phone, or by fax at (317) 232-8004.

In order to determine the degree to which Indiana schools are conforming to the standards considered to be necessary for Indiana students to receive adequate levels of education, the Indiana Department of Education administers testing and proficiency programs. The Office of Student Assessment, as a specific section of the Indiana Department of Education, is responsible for this aspect of the State educational system.

The Indiana Department of Education maintains an extensive website where people can access information, such as Federal Progress Ratings and State Progress Ratings to determine the State school system’s overall level of performance.
