The California Department of Education administers general administrative and financial considerations related to education throughout the State of California. The Department also provides oversight over various individual sections, such as the Orange County Department of Education, among others.

The governing administrative body for the California Department of Education is the State Board of Education, or SBE, with the main officer of this organization being the California State Superintendent of Public Institutions. This position carries a term of four years. As of 2010, Superintendent Jack O’Connell is in charge of administering the California Department of Education.

The California Department of Education is responsible for administering funding to the State’s educations sector, carrying out tests to affirm that individual California schools are remaining at desired levels of performance and administering compliance with State and Federal standards on the part of individual sections, such as the Orange County Department of Education.

The California Department of Education provides for testing through the Accountability Progress Reporting (APR) function, which is comprised of the Academic Performance Index, or API, which is administered by the State, and the Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, and Program Improvement, or PI, which are administered by the Federal Government.
