The Department of Taxation is a branch of state government that exists within each of the 50 United States. This branch – to which can also be referred as the Department of Finance – is primarily responsible for the management, regulation, and enforcement of all legislature with regard to financial code and monetary administration; this can include a variety of taxes, debt management, collections, accounting, and auditing procedures. The state Department of Taxation is not synonymous with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which is responsible for the regulation of taxes and monetary procedure on a nationwide level.

Department of Taxation Duties

Although the respective duties of each of the 50 Departments of Taxation vary respectively, the primary functions of each of these departments ensures that all monetary regulation, financial management, and fiscal legislature are in compliance with state legislature:

Certain states’ respective Department of Taxation may be responsible for the regulation of financial institutions; this can range from the enforcement of legal policy with regard to the management of monies and investments to investigative measures with regard to any or all unlawful actions

Certain states’ respective Department of Taxation will be responsible for the administration, management, and regulation of state-mandated taxes, which can range from the proposal and institution of applicable tax laws to the investigation of tax-related crimes on a state level

Certain states’ respective Department of Taxation may be responsible for accounting duties that involve the adherence to state budget with regard to spending and collections
